Covenant UMC launching Celebrate Recovery!

posted on August 02

Covenant UMC (La Grange) is launching a Celebrate Recovery ministry this fall.

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ centered recovery group and a safe place to share struggles and victories from hurts, habits, and hang-ups. This ministry is focused on supporting one another, not "fixing" one another.

The general meeting is open to all adults and will be focused on discovering new principles that can be applied toward individual recovery, worship of the One who delivers, and celebrations over struggles. There is a gender specific focus, or "open-share" groups, which focus on current obstacles that may be blocking ways through life. These groups are open to anyone of the corresponding gender and affliction type that recognizes they don't have it all together.

While CR is similar to other secular recovery groups, there are some distinct differences. Not only is the focus on all types of hurts, habits, and hang-ups, but CR also recognizes that our higher power is Jesus Christ! The most important thing about CR is that it is completely anonymous. What is said here, stays here!

What can you expect at a meeting?

A typical Celebrate Recovery meeting includes:

  • A large group meeting
  • An "open share" small group
  • Newcomers 101 (for your first week only)
Participants are encouraged to invite their families and friends to the pre-meeting coffeehouse style snack if they so choose. The cafe is designed for a time of great fellowship and great food with other Celebrate Recovery participants.

The large group meeting is designed for the participant to set aside the busyness and stress of the outside world by entering into a time of prayer, praise and worship, and teaching. This is a way of getting in touch with the one and only Higher Power, Jesus Christ.

The "open share" small group meets immediately after the large group and provides a place for the participant to connect with other Celebrate Recovery attendees. This is a safe place where participants can be in gender-specific groups and issue-specific groups.

Newcomers 101 is for first-time attendees and will help new attendees better understand what Celebrate Recovery is all about as well as provide the opportunity to ask questions or process feelings in a safe environment before making a commitment to a small group.

After a participant has attended Celebrate Recovery for a while, they will join a step study. The step study small group is for those who are ready to delve deeper into their past and the choices they have made. This is where participants will see real, lasting changes start to happen. Step studies take place on another night of the week, separate from the large group meeting and "open space" groups.

Any church that wants to provide leadership at Celebrate Recovery is welcome to join Covenant UMC in this ministry, whether or not they are Methodist. This is a community ministry more than an individual church ministry. Any interested church is welcome to take part in leading this with Covenant UMC.
